Gamescom 2026 Is Almost Here, And This Year Looks Huge

If you are searching for the Gamescom 2026 schedule, the biggest Gamescom 2026 games, or simply wondering which upcoming PC and console releases are worth watching, the end of August is going to be busy.

Gamescom officially returns to Cologne from August 26 to 30, with Opening Night Live beginning the celebrations on August 25. The wider Gamescom week actually starts earlier through Gamescom Dev, the industry-focused developer conference taking place from August 23 to 25.

There is also a good reason expectations are particularly high this year. For the first time, organizers have confirmed that all available Gamescom exhibition space has been completely booked. Xbox, Nintendo, Capcom, Ubisoft, Electronic Arts, CD Projekt Red, Bandai Namco, SEGA, Konami, Tencent Games, HoYoverse, Embark Studios, Deep Silver and many more are among the confirmed names. Fun fact: I will also be there! Come say hi if you’re there 🙂 Let us know in the comments below if you do make it!

To be fair, the enormous exhibitor list does not mean every company is arriving with a secret AAA announcement. Gamescom has always been a mixture of reveals, playable games, business meetings, community events and titles we already know about getting their first substantial public demonstrations.

That is also what makes it useful. Summer showcases tell us which games exist. Gamescom often gives players their first chance to see whether those games actually feel good to play. Sort of a first review. And that’s important!

Opening Night Live Is Where The Big Announcements Begin

For anyone watching Gamescom from home, which I’ve done all my life, Opening Night Live remains the obvious starting point.

Geoff Keighley returns alongside co-host Eefje “sjokz” Depoortere on August 25, with world premieres, new trailers, updates and announcements from across the industry. Gamescom has already confirmed that the show will contain news on titles including METRO 2039 and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Songs of the Past, while the inevitable unannounced reveals are part of what makes ONL worth watching.

If you only intend to watch one Gamescom event, ONL is probably still the one.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Will Be One of the Biggest Games at the Show

Xbox has one of the clearest confirmed lineups so far, with 25 upcoming games and 140 gaming stations planned for its Gamescom booth.

The obvious headline attraction is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. Attendees will be able to play its core 6v6 multiplayer on Xbox Series X and get a proper feel for the movement, gunplay and new ballistic systems before the game launches on October 23.

We have already covered the announcement and what Infinity Ward is changing in our full article, so Gamescom should provide a much better opportunity to judge whether those ideas actually translate into enjoyable multiplayer. For Call of Duty fans, that could be much more valuable than another carefully edited trailer.

Gears of War: E-Day, Fable and Several First-Time Playable Games

Microsoft is not relying entirely on Call of Duty either.

Gears of War: E-Day will receive its first public playable campaign demonstration at Gamescom before its October 6 release. Considering how strongly the game is leaning into the origins of Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago during the emergence of the Locust, this should be one of the more interesting hands-on opportunities for anyone who grew up with the original Gears trilogy.

Fable is taking a different approach. Playground Games will present a live gameplay theater demonstration showing the new Albion, its combat system and the flexibility between magic, ranged attacks and melee fighting.

Visitors will also be able to try Minecraft Dungeons II for the first time, alongside first hands-on opportunities for METRO 2039 and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio’s STRANGER THAN HEAVEN. Xbox is also bringing Alien: Isolation 2, Halo: Campaign Evolved, Forza Horizon 6 and several other titles to Cologne.

That variety is exactly what Gamescom should be about. Some games need another trailer. Others become far more convincing once somebody who is not part of the development team actually gets to play them.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword Is Another Game Worth Watching Closely

One game we have been following particularly closely is Capcom’s Onimusha: Way of the Sword.

The game is already approaching its September release, which makes Gamescom one of Capcom’s final major opportunities to show players exactly what they are getting. Its sword combat, Oni abilities, soul absorption mechanics and supernatural interpretation of Kyoto have already created strong early impressions through the playable demo.

The Future Games Show at Gamescom has confirmed that Onimusha: Way of the Sword will be featured alongside games such as Tides of Annihilation and NO LAW. The showcase takes place on August 26 and is expected to feature more than 40 titles through new footage, interviews, premieres and developer segments.

If you missed our earlier coverage, you can read it here for the complete breakdown. PC players already planning to pick it up can also check the current Onimusha: Way of the Sword Steam key at Gamers-Outlet.net.

Please DO NOT Ignore The Indie Games

Gamescom is easy to associate with massive booths, giant publishers and queues that somehow become longer every time you look away, but the indie section is arguably one of the most useful areas at the entire event.

The dedicated Indie Arena Booth returns with more than 2,000 square metres allocated to independent games, while the gamescom awesome indies show, produced together with IGN, takes place on August 27. The roughly 60 to 75-minute presentation will focus specifically on independent developers and games that may struggle to receive attention alongside the largest AAA releases.

This matters because some of the games that leave the strongest impression at Gamescom are not necessarily the ones with a fifty-foot statue hanging above their booth.

They are the ones you knew nothing about before walking inside.

Gaming Hardware Is Becoming Just As Interesting

Software naturally receives most of the attention, but anyone interested in PC gaming should keep an eye on the hardware side too. Gaming displays, cases, keyboards, cooling systems, peripherals, power supplies and increasingly powerful compact PCs are all competing for attention alongside new games.

The Pro Gamers Group, for example, has confirmed a substantial hardware showcase in the Gamescom 2026 B2B area with brands and partners including HAVN, Endgame Gear, noblechairs, Ducky, Phanteks and LYNK+. LYNK+ will be represented alongside the group’s hardware portfolio as it continues developing its modular liquid-cooling ecosystem for high-performance GPUs and CPUs.

It is a small part of the overall show, but it demonstrates something important about Gamescom. Gaming does not progress through software alone. The hardware required to run increasingly demanding games is evolving right beside it.

Final Thoughts

Gamescom 2026 already looks unusually strong before the doors have even opened.

All available exhibition space is booked, many of the industry’s largest publishers are returning, Xbox has prepared one of the most substantial playable lineups at the show, indie developers have more dedicated visibility, and Opening Night Live will once again give millions of people outside Cologne a way to follow the announcements.

More importantly, Gamescom arrives at the perfect point in the calendar. The major summer showcases are finished, but the busy autumn release season has not started yet. This is where publishers have to move beyond announcement trailers and begin proving that their games are actually ready to play.

Whether you are visiting Cologne, watching every showcase online, or simply waiting to see which games deserve a spot in your library, August 25 is where the next major wave of gaming news begins. And considering how packed the Koelnmesse already is, there should be plenty to talk about. I should be there from Aug 26-28, so definitely let us know if you’re gonna make it.
