Gamescom 2026 has been over for a couple of weeks, and the wishlist damage is beginning to sink in. Geralt is getting another adventure, Marcus and Dom are heading back to the beginning, and Remedy apparently thinks Manhattan would benefit from supernatural contamination. Plenty to look forward to, then. If you are deciding which PC game keys to buy next, these are five Gamescom reveals and updates worth keeping on your radar.
Our Gamescom 2026 preview covered what we hoped to see before the doors opened. Now comes the more interesting question: which announcements still sound exciting once the trailers have stopped? These are our picks from Opening Night Live and the wider show.
1. The Witcher 3: A Free Upgrade Worth Checking Before You Buy
An eleven-year-old game taking one of the biggest spots at Gamescom sounds slightly ridiculous, until that game is The Witcher 3. CD PROJEKT RED brought a new look at Songs of the Past, which sends Geralt to the region of Letten in 2027, and announced The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered for 29 September 2026. That gives returning players both a new destination to anticipate and a reason to revisit the existing adventure.
The buying detail matters here: Remastered will be a free upgrade for eligible existing owners, while the original Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine expansions will also become available to base-game owners. Songs of the Past is a separate upcoming expansion, so those announcements should not be confused.
This earns a place on our list because it rewards people who already own the game while giving newcomers more to play. Geralt has somehow made retirement look less likely than ever. 2. Gears of War: E-Day Made the Locust Feel Dangerous Again
Gamescom gave Gears of War: E-Day a new story trailer and its first public campaign hands-on opportunity ahead of the 6 October 2026 launch. The prequel follows younger versions of Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago as the Locust invasion tears through everyday life. That setting gives the familiar characters a different kind of pressure: they are discovering what this enemy can do while trying to keep people alive. I was there. It was amazing to see this irl.
Xbox Wire’s campaign preview highlighted Locust that flank, retreat and use smoke, alongside the returning reload mechanic and support for four-player campaign co-op. Those details make the update interesting. Cover shooting becomes much more tense when the creature you were firing at has quietly decided to approach from somewhere else.
The appeal is easy to understand for anyone who misses the darker atmosphere of the earlier games. There is room for friendship and humour, but the invasion needs to feel frightening. 3. Metro 2039 Turned the Tension Up
Metro 2039’s Renegade gameplay trailer was another highlight, putting the mysterious Stranger at the centre of a world shaped by the oppressive Novoreich regime. Gamescom also gave visitors their first opportunity to play the game, making this a substantial update for a series whose atmosphere depends so heavily on how it feels to move through its world.
The new equipment caught my attention for sure. The Shatun pneumatic weapon needs its pressure maintained, while a UV flashlight can reveal concealed threats and clues. Breaching charges and a blowtorch introduce additional ways through certain obstacles. These are small, practical interactions, but they give players more to think about than simply following a marker and emptying a magazine. And I like this type of gameplay!
That is the appeal of Metro at its best: you want to explore, even when everything around you suggests that opening another door might be a terrible idea. With a February 2027 launch window, there is still a wait ahead, but the Gamescom footage provided plenty to examine. 4. Control Resonant Made Manhattan Look Wonderfully Wrong
Control Resonant brought new footage and public hands-on access to Gamescom ahead of its 24 September 2026 release. Dylan Faden takes the lead this time, stepping into a distorted Manhattan with supernatural abilities and a transforming melee weapon. Moving beyond the Oldest House gives Remedy a much larger playground for its particular brand of weirdness.
The Gamescom presentation explored an area overtaken by the Mold, with gravity-shifting traversal and aggressive combat. Game Informer’s preview described a dodge-focused system without blocking or parrying, plus health recovered from defeated enemies. That combination suggests a game that wants you moving, attacking and making use of your abilities instead of patiently waiting for a safe opening.
The change in combat is a substantial gamble, and a promising demonstration cannot settle every question about the full game. Still, this was one of the updates that made us want to see more simply because it looked so distinctive. A city full of impossible architecture and dangerous mould is a fairly convincing invitation for a Remedy fan. Check the Control Resonant PC Steam key if it has joined your September shortlist. As a diehard Remedy fan myself, I can’t wait to play this game.
5. Heroes of Might and Magic III Remake Was a Proper Strategy Surprise
Among all the cinematic action, Heroes of Might and Magic III Remake gave strategy fans an announcement worth pausing for. Ubisoft revealed a 2027 release for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, rebuilding Erathia in its Snowdrop engine with a 3D world and freely controlled camera.
The more interesting promises concern what survives that transformation. The remake includes the original campaigns and both expansions, while bringing back Hot Seat multiplayer and adding simultaneous turns online. Ubisoft also says it will preserve compatibility with existing community maps and campaigns, supported by updated editing tools.
For a game with such a dedicated community, that last point deserves attention. Years of player-created adventures are a huge part of its appeal, and keeping them accessible could matter more than any lighting upgrade. The challenge will be preserving the clarity and pace that make the original so absorbing. We will need gameplay to judge that properly, but this was an excellent surprise for anyone whose idea of a quick session somehow becomes another three hours. A Quick Look at the Gaming Hardware
Away from the game reveals, gaming hardware had its place too, from displays and peripherals to the cooling systems inside demanding PC builds.
