Should You Pre-Order a Metro 2039 PC Steam Key?
Metro has always made an ordinary maintenance problem feel like an emergency. A struggling weapon or an expiring gas-mask filter becomes considerably more interesting when something is moving in the dark.
Metro 2039 is scheduled for 4 February 2027, and you can already pre-order a Metro 2039 PC Steam key at Gamers-Outlet. Check the current price and discount while deciding whether this return to Moscow belongs in your library.
There is plenty to discuss, especially if Metro Exodus was your last visit. A different protagonist, a transformed underground society and new survival tools give the next game an identity of its own.

How Does Metro 2039 Connect to the Older Games?
Metro 2039 is the fourth mainline game, following Metro 2033, Metro: Last Light and Metro Exodus. The original trilogy followed Artyom through Moscow’s underground communities before Exodus sent him and the Spartan Rangers across post-apocalyptic Russia. Just in case you didn’t know.
The new game brings us back to Moscow six years after the setting of Metro 2033. Hunter now leads the Novoreich, an authoritarian power promising a future on the surface while keeping people under its control through propaganda and fear. That changes the political landscape of a Metro previously divided between competing factions.
The Renegade trailer also brings back the Dark Ones’ voices. Their role remains a mystery, giving returning players another connection to investigate. This is an original story developed with Metro author Dmitry Glukhovsky. It draws on his universe without adapting a particular novel.
A New Protagonist Changes How the Story Is Told
The biggest character change is The Stranger, a recluse whose nightmares and unresolved past pull him back towards the Metro. He is fully voiced, giving the story a different way to communicate his personality and reactions.
His Spartan armour makes some people expect a protector, but his priorities lie with his own mission. That tension gives him an intriguing place in the story.
For returning players, that creates room to discover Moscow through another person’s history. For newcomers, the publisher explicitly describes Metro 2039 as a suitable starting point, with a new protagonist and cast. Knowing Artyom’s journey adds context, but you can approach this adventure without completing a trilogy first.
New Tools Make Exploring Moscow More Tempting
The Renegade gameplay reveal introduced equipment that changes what you can investigate. A breaching tool opens specific weak walls, while a cutting torch gets through certain welded doors. Both can uncover alternative routes, hidden supplies and stories you would otherwise miss.
The new UV light has several jobs: exposing concealed mutants, repelling flying Insectalis and revealing codes or puzzle clues. Meanwhile, the Shatun pneumatic rifle needs pumping to maintain its power.
That makes exploration a question of what your equipment lets you attempt. A useful-looking door at the end of the corridor becomes harder to ignore. We highlighted these additions in our Gamescom 2026 recap. They remain some of the most promising changes shown so far. Feel free to let us know below what you think 🙂
Blueprints Give Scavenging a New Purpose
Blueprints are another confirmed addition, allowing you to craft upgrades and attachments for weapons and gear. Finding them gives exploration a reward beyond whatever ammunition happens to be lying around.
The publisher’s Specialist Pack pre-order bonus offers early access to three blueprints for interchangeable backpack upgrades. Their specialisations cover equipment crafting, filters and equipment upkeep, or ammunition. You can equip one upgrade at a time, so the choice is about how you want to prepare for the journey.
That suggests a useful layer of planning. Someone who investigates radioactive areas may value different support equipment from a player prioritising firearms. Check the selected product’s bonus details before buying.
Why the Return Underground Matters
Exodus expanded the series through large outdoor environments. Metro 2039 puts Moscow’s tunnels and settlements back at the centre, alongside expeditions onto the irradiated surface. That should appeal particularly to players who miss the pressure and intimacy of the earlier games.
The setting also carries the studio’s perspective. 4A Games has explained how Russia’s invasion of Ukraine shaped this story’s treatment of oppression, fear and freedom. Hunter’s regime gives those themes a direct presence in the world you explore.
There is technical ambition behind it as well. The game uses 4A’s own engine, and the studio has shown PS5 Pro gameplay at 60fps in Performance Mode with ray tracing. PC players should check the final system requirements when planning their purchase.
What Should You Play Before Metro 2039?
For the full journey, play Metro 2033 Redux, Metro: Last Light Redux and Metro Exodus in that order. You will get the clearest sense of how the world and its people changed before the new adventure.
October’s PC Redux update also brings visual improvements, modern upscaling options and fixes to the first two games. It is a timely opportunity to revisit the foundations. Already played those? You can get Metro Exodus for PC Steam at Gamers-Outlet while waiting for February. It is available now and shows the series’ previous major change in direction. And we have it at a great price too! Fastest delivery, no questions asked.
