Resonance takes place 15 years before the previous games and follows a younger Sophia, the smuggler who later became one of Amicia and Hugo’s allies.

This makes the new game a prequel and a companion story rather than the third chapter of Amicia and Hugo’s journey. Asobo has described it as a different perspective on the same universe, using another protagonist and a noticeably changed style of gameplay to explore the history of the Macula. I guess it is a spin-off then? Kinda like Better Call Saul.

That distinction gives Resonance room to try something new without pretending the events of Requiem never happened. The familiar world, historical brutality, supernatural mystery, and emotional storytelling remain, but the way players interact with them has changed considerably.

Sophia Is Nothing Like Amicia

A Plague Tale: Innocence introduced Amicia as a teenager suddenly forced to protect her younger brother from the Inquisition, English soldiers, disease, and supernatural swarms of rats. She could use a sling and gradually learned to defend herself, but violence always felt dangerous and desperate.

Requiem made Amicia more capable and far more aggressive. Players received additional tools, weapons, and opportunities to fight, yet stealth remained a central part of the experience. Amicia was still protecting Hugo, and most encounters reflected the pressure of keeping him alive while trying to avoid becoming surrounded.

Sophia begins from a completely different position. Raised among one of Venice’s most feared gangs, she has already fought, survived raids, and become an experienced plunderer by the time Resonance begins. She is fast, confident, and entirely comfortable confronting several enemies at close range.

Her story begins after the Venetian army destroys much of her gang and forces her to flee with Leni, her closest friend. Haunted by visions connected to the legend of the Minotaur, Sophia travels toward a mysterious Mediterranean island in search of answers about her past. This change of protagonist affects more than the dialogue. Resonance can build its entire gameplay system around someone who already knows how to fight rather than gradually turning another vulnerable character into a survivor.

Combat Is More Direct, Faster, and Far More Physical

Innocence was primarily a stealth adventure. Amicia distracted guards, manipulated light, used rats against enemies, and relied on her sling when avoiding conflict was no longer possible. Requiem broadened those options with a crossbow, alchemical ammunition, larger environments, and more aggressive encounters, but many battles could still become overwhelming very quickly.

Resonance moves away from pure stealth and places sword combat near the centre of the experience. Sophia fights with a scimitar, combines successive strikes to stun opponents, and can finish vulnerable enemies with a charged dagger attack. Blocking, dodging, and parrying are all important, while colour-coded attacks help players understand which threats can be countered and which must be avoided.

Her grapnel can pull archers from raised positions or drag enemies into range. Environmental objects can also become weapons, allowing Sophia to grab a nearby bottle or piece of debris and throw it directly at an opponent. Combat previews suggest fights can be fast and satisfying when played correctly, but Sophia is not invincible. Missing a parry or losing control of a group can still lead to a brutal death.

This looks less like the nervous stealth of The Last of Us and closer to the pulpy adventure of Tomb Raider or Uncharted. Asobo has openly cited those series as useful points of comparison, while its first attempt at full melee combat has also taken lessons from games including Ghost of Tsushima, Sekiro, Sifu, and En Garde. All great games btw, so I doubt the final product would be disappointing considering they took inspiration from such classics.

The goal does not appear to be creating another punishing Soulslike. Resonance instead wants sword fighting that is readable, impactful, and entertaining without losing the unforgiving tone associated with A Plague Tale.

There Are NO RATS This Time

The rat swarms became the defining image of both Innocence and Requiem. They were enemies, environmental hazards, supernatural weapons, puzzles, and a physical representation of Hugo’s connection to the Macula. Resonance will not bring them back.

Asobo has confirmed that there are no rats in the new game. The developers felt they had already explored the mechanic extensively across two complete adventures, particularly during the enormous and technically ambitious swarm sequences in Requiem. Repeating the same idea with another protagonist risked making Resonance feel like a less meaningful variation of what came before. And personally I hated the rats with a passion. They are scary. I HATE RATS!

The Macula remains important, but it will express itself differently. Asobo is deliberately keeping the exact nature of that threat secret, although the island’s Minotaur mythology, Sophia’s visions, and a mysterious presence hunting her through the ruins all appear connected.

Removing the rats is a significant gamble because they made A Plague Tale instantly recognisable. At the same time, it may be the correct decision. Sophia deserves her own type of danger, and the Macula should feel larger than a single supernatural phenomenon tied exclusively to Hugo.

A Different Tone Without Abandoning The Series

The first two games were emotionally exhausting by design. Amicia and Hugo rarely had time to recover before another tragedy, betrayal, or swarm forced them to move again. Their relationship gave the series its heart, but it also created an increasingly heavy atmosphere.

Sophia brings a different energy. She is more self-assured, capable of joking during danger, and accompanied by someone who relates to her as a close friend rather than a younger sibling requiring protection. The Mediterranean sunlight, ancient ruins, and adventurous tone create a brighter surface, even though Asobo has made it clear that the story will eventually become darker.

This does not mean Resonance is abandoning emotional storytelling. Sophia is still running from a destroyed home, searching for the truth about her identity, and confronting a curse tied to the Macula. The difference is that the adventure can breathe a little more before applying the pressure.

That tonal flexibility may help the game reach people who admired Innocence and Requiem but found their constant misery difficult to revisit.

Do You Need To Play Innocence And Requiem First?

Asobo says newcomers can understand Resonance without playing the first two games. Because the story takes place earlier, Sophia has not yet met Amicia and Hugo, and the central mystery is designed to stand on its own.

Playing Requiem will still make Sophia’s presence more meaningful. Returning players already know the older version of the character, which creates an interesting opportunity to understand how she became that woman. Familiarity with the Macula will also add context to the supernatural elements, even if its new manifestation has not yet been explained.

However, neither game should be treated as mandatory homework. Resonance is being positioned as another entry point into the universe rather than a reward exclusively for existing fans.

Final Thoughts

Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy is taking a considerable risk by changing the protagonist, timeline, combat system, setting, and most recognisable threat of the previous games. It would have been much easier to create another story about a frightened pair hiding from soldiers while rats consumed everything around them.

Asobo has chosen the more interesting option. Sophia’s experience as a fighter supports a faster and more direct style of combat. The Minotaur’s Island creates space for historical mystery, traps, environmental puzzles, and two connected timelines. Removing the rats allows the Macula to become something unpredictable again rather than relying on the same visual spectacle for a third game.

Innocence was about two children learning to survive together. Requiem expanded that struggle into a larger and more destructive tragedy. Resonance appears to be about identity, fate, and uncovering why the past refuses to remain buried. It may not be A Plague Tale 3, but that could be exactly why it deserves attention.

We currently do not have this item in stock, but as soon as we have it on our store, we will update the article here for you so you can get it easily, hassle-free and with the confidence of trusting Gamers-Outlet.net 😉

Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy replaces Amicia, Hugo, stealth-focused survival, and supernatural rat swarms with Sophia, direct sword combat, Minoan puzzles, Greek mythology, and a mysterious new expression of the Macula.
