Serious Sam Returns, And Apparently One Sam Was Not Enough (It Never Is)

Are you perchance pondering whether this new game is basically Serious Sam mixed with DOOM and a roguelite? The answer is somewhere between yes and complete nonsense. Which is probably exactly what Serious Sam should be.

Shatterverse launches on August 31, 2026 and takes one of gaming’s least subtle first-person shooter franchises in a noticeably different direction. Instead of another conventional campaign built around Sam Stone running backwards while several hundred enemies scream directly at him, Behaviour Interactive has created a run-based co-op shooter for up to five players.

The formula may be changing, but the philosophy clearly is not. You still receive absurd weapons, enormous battlefields, waves of enemies that seem personally offended by your continued existence, and enough explosions to make careful ammunition conservation feel almost inappropriate.

Serious Sam has never been particularly interested in restraint. Shatterverse seems determined to make that somebody else’s problem.

The Multiverse Is Broken, So Naturally There Are Several Sams Now

The setup is exactly as ridiculous as you would expect. Uber Mental has fractured the barriers separating multiple universes, creating a chaotic collection of timelines in which different versions of Serious Sam exist simultaneously. Some realities have already lost their battles against Mental, so the remaining Sams are recruited into the Serious Program, a multidimensional organisation trying to repair the damage.

I honestly don’t understand. Like, every single franchise is just going for the SAME Multiversal route, and although it is entertaining at times, the fact that this overused formula gets me frustrated these days says a lot about what this game might end up being.

The objective is relatively straightforward by Serious Sam standards. Travel through the Shatterverse, destroy Mental’s forces, and eliminate five powerful lieutenants standing between you and whatever counts as saving reality this time. Where things become much less straightforward is the cast.

Shatterverse uses alternate versions of Sam drawn from different universes, eras, designs, and interpretations of the character. Early footage has already shown Sams with wildly different visual styles, creating a deliberately messy celebration of the franchise’s 25-year history rather than pretending the multiverse concept needs to be taken seriously.

How Shatterverse Changes the Traditional Serious Sam Formula

The biggest difference is the roguelite structure. Traditional Serious Sam games generally follow handcrafted campaigns where Sam moves between large arenas, explores environments, collects weapons, discovers secrets, and eventually triggers fights involving an unreasonable quantity of enemies. Shatterverse retains the arenas and hordes but reorganises them into repeatable runs.

Each attempt takes players through shifting combinations of handcrafted areas while run modifiers, unstable anomalies, hidden portals, upgrades, and powerful boons change how that particular attempt develops. Some opportunities can dramatically improve your build, while others may make an already chaotic situation considerably worse.

Death is expected rather than treated purely as failure. Repeated runs unlock additional possibilities and permanent upgrades, encouraging players to experiment instead of searching for one perfect loadout and never changing it again.

That structure also makes considerably more sense once co-op enters the picture. A five-player squad experimenting with strange upgrades and complementary builds could create a level of chaos that even older Serious Sam games rarely achieved.

The important part is that Behaviour does not appear to be replacing the shooting with complicated roguelite spreadsheets. The official description repeatedly emphasizes big guns, aggressive arena combat, constant pressure, and huge numbers of enemies. The roguelite systems are there to remix Serious Sam rather than turn it into an entirely different genre.

This Is Not Serious Sam Taking Itself Seriously (The Puns Are Coming)

One of the reasons Serious Sam has survived for 25 years is that the franchise understands exactly what it is. There are shooters built around military authenticity, carefully written political conflicts, realistic weapon handling, and emotionally complicated protagonists. Serious Sam has a man with bombs for hands screaming while sprinting toward you. And that is perfectly fine.

The humour has always come from exaggeration. Sam fires enormous weapons at impossible numbers of enemies, delivers terrible one-liners at precisely the wrong moment, and treats planetary extinction events like another inconvenient afternoon.

Shatterverse pushes that identity even further by making the entire universe unstable. Different versions of Sam can coexist, classic enemies return alongside completely new monsters, weapon designs can become increasingly ridiculous, and run modifiers allow the developers to bend their own rules whenever doing so creates something entertaining.

To be fair, that tone will not work for everyone. Players looking for a serious narrative-driven shooter may find the constant jokes exhausting. However, trying to make Serious Sam more mature would probably defeat the reason people still care about it. The stupidity is part of the charm.

So, How Similar Is It to DOOM?

Quite a bit on the surface, but considerably less once you look at how both games actually play.

Serious Sam and DOOM share the same fundamental love of movement, massive weapons, demonic or alien creatures, arena combat, heavy music, and turning enemies into several smaller enemies. Neither franchise wants you hiding behind chest-high cover waiting for your health to regenerate. But their combat philosophy is different.

Modern DOOM games are tightly designed around aggression and resource management. Every weapon, Glory Kill, ammunition pickup, defensive tool, and movement mechanic feeds into a carefully controlled combat rhythm. DOOM: The Dark Ages slows that movement somewhat compared with Eternal, but it still treats encounters almost like violent combat puzzles where the player is expected to understand how every mechanic interacts.

Serious Sam is much closer to an arcade shooter. The question is rarely “which precise mechanic should I use against this particular enemy?” It is more often “why are approximately 120 enemies running toward me, and which weapon creates the largest hole?” Shatterverse amplifies that difference further. DOOM: The Dark Ages is a highly authored single-player campaign. Shatterverse is built around repeatable runs, procedural variation, co-op, randomised opportunities, modifiers, and evolving builds.

DOOM makes you feel like the most dangerous creature in the room.

Serious Sam sometimes makes you wonder whether there is enough room left to contain all the dangerous creatures currently running toward you.

What We Know About the Weapons, Enemies, and Progression

Some classic enemies are already confirmed to return, including familiar Serious Sam monsters alongside entirely new creatures created for the Shatterverse. The important promise is scale. Enemy hordes remain fundamental to the experience, and the arenas are built around overwhelming players rather than carefully rationing opponents.

Weapons follow a similar philosophy. Iconic Serious Sam favourites return beside new equipment designed specifically around the roguelite structure. Powerful boons can alter a build during each run, while modifiers and permanent progression gradually increase the number of strategies available.

There are also hidden portals, unstable anomalies, and high-risk opportunities scattered throughout runs. Pushing deeper may produce significantly better rewards, but doing so also increases the possibility of losing the run entirely.

This creates something older Serious Sam games did not really have – a reason to wonder whether continuing forward is actually a good idea. Sam will obviously continue forward anyway.

What Can You Play While Waiting?

At the time of writing, Serious Sam: Shatterverse is not currently listed for purchase on Gamers-Outlet.net, so we are not going to pretend otherwise or send readers toward an unrelated product page.

This article can be updated as soon as a Serious Sam: Shatterverse PC key becomes available in the store. However, several existing games provide excellent ways to understand what the franchise is about before August 31.

You can currently buy Serious Sam 4 PC Steam Key through Gamers-Outlet.net. Players wanting another modern entry can also check Serious Sam: Siberian Mayhem PC Steam Key.

Both retain the traditional formula of enormous enemy waves, ridiculous weapons, large environments, and unapologetically arcade-style shooting.

If You Like Serious Sam, You Should Probably Try DOOM Too

There is also an obvious alternative for anyone attracted specifically to the speed, violence, weapons, and complete absence of subtlety. Funny thing is that Doom is actualy more “serious” than Serious Sam.

DOOM: The Dark Ages PC Steam Key is currently available through Gamers-Outlet.net and provides a much more structured interpretation of the same basic fantasy: give the player an outrageous arsenal and place an enormous amount of extremely unfortunate creatures between them and the objective.

We have also covered the game extensively in this article, which provides a useful comparison if Shatterverse has caught your attention because of its combat rather than its roguelite mechanics.

Gamers-Outlet currently holds a 4.6 out of 5 Trustpilot rating from almost 44,000 customer reviews, giving buyers an independent way to check recent customer experiences before purchasing a digital game key.

Why Us?

At Gamers-Outlet.net, we cover upcoming games before they become available so players can understand what is worth watching rather than discovering a title only after release.

Serious Sam: Shatterverse is not currently available through our store, but this article will be updated when a PC key listing becomes available. Until then, players can revisit Serious Sam 4, jump into Siberian Mayhem, or explore DOOM: The Dark Ages if they want another shooter built around big weapons, overwhelming enemies, and very little concern for subtlety. And obviously, seriousness over tomfoolery.

Keep an eye on Gamers-Outlet.net as we approach the August 31 release. 🙂
